With Golden State's dominant NBA run over, the Warriors are turning towards a rebuild. That means letting franchise legends like Stephen Curry move on. There are a few scenarios where Curry could potentially end up on the Sacramento Kings, a game-changing move for the beleaguered franchise.
For the better part of a decade, the league was utterly owned by Curry and the Warriors. They made the finals in six out of ten seasons, and won four NBA Championships in that run. There was a point that they were in the finals five seasons in a row. It's an amazing legacy for any franchise to have.
Since that last title in 2022, the league has caught up. Other teams like the Spurs, Thunder, and Knicks have become dominant. The problem is that Golden State didn't improve their game to match. Instead of cultivating young talent, the franchise drove them off in favor of rapidly aging stars.
This might be the greatest "what if" scenario in Kings' history
The exception to that is Curry, who at the age of 38 and after 17 seasons in the league hasn't lost a step. He remains an elite, top-tier point guard. Still, the Warriors are looking to build towards the future, one that does not include Curry. That's where teams like the Kings enter the conversation.
Curry's current contract is up at the end of the 2026-2027 season, meaning he could be an unrestricted free agent. Beyond that, ownership and management have said that they would honor Curry's request for a trade if he made it. They feel he has more than earned that from them.
For the Kings, the contracts of both De'Andre Hunter and Zach LaVine are up at the same time as Curry's. Sacramento will not extend LaVine, and aren't likely to extend Hunter. If Curry is in play, you can bet they won't keep Hunter. Between both players, that's a lot of salary cap to work with.
Curry on the Kings would break brains
Just for the fun of it, let's say the Kings send Hunter and LaVine to the Warriors for Curry. Or they let the duo walk to pick up Curry as a free agent. Either way, the Kings now have one of the greatest point guards of all time to help rebuild the team and make the franchise relevant once again.
This would be a huge deal for any of the young players on the Kings' roster, particularly Darius Acuff Jr. Everyone knows that he has all the talent and potential to be truly great if he has someone to show him how to succeed. Imagine what kind of player Acuff could be with a mentor like Steph Curry.
A lot has to happen for this to work out, and it most likely won't. It's just kind of mind-bending to think that there is a legitimately possible path to bringing Curry to the Kings. If that's not enough, there remains the potential to also get Jonathan Kuminga there at the same time. Game-changing.
