The Sacramento Kings have shown some improvement, now with a record of two and four. Part of that is due to the play of Russell Westbrook, who is finding a groove with the Kings and playing with both consistency and impact. But it might already be too late to save the Kings' season.
When the rumors started flying about the Kings wanting to sign Westbrook, basically everyone wanted to know why. Sacramento is practically drowning in guards, and they really didn't need any more. It was hard to see what kind of need he was filling.
It certainly wasn't a gap in veteran players. The Kings already had DeMar DeRozan, who is now in his 17th season. Adding in another All-Star entering his 18th season wasn't really necessary. Leadership wasn't an issue either, as Sacramento has Zach LaVine, who has also been in the league for a minute.
Upon signing Westbrook, general manager Scott Perry indicated that they want him to be the catalyst for a change in culture for the Kings. Additionally, the team sees him as a veteran point guard backup for Dennis Schroder, who tends to run really hot and cold throughout the season.
Westbrook still has gas in tank
What has been interesting about watching Russell play this season is how much of a difference he's making on the court. He started off quite slow, but has been steadily picking up momentum each game. Against the Bucks, he totaled 12 points, five rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals.

Russ being Russ, he also picked up five personal fouls and got into it with Giannis Antetokounmpo after wrapping him up. But that's the kind of intensity and passion you want to see Westbrook play with. Plus, his numbers are getting more and more consistent, which is good to see.
This is the kind of example the Kings need Westbrook to set for the rookies and other young players. Go hard every game. Don't give an inch to your opponent. Win or lose, stay consistent. Those are the traits that lead to success, keeping in mind success means different things to different people.
It might not be enough to completely turn this season around, but it could help change the culture in Sacramento. That is a success on its own because that's how you start building towards the future. Sure, that's not likely to get Westbrook a ring, though he could put the Kings on the right path.
