If there's one player who continues to amaze nearly two decades into his career, it's Russell Westbrook. After the Sacramento Kings loss to the Spurs, Brodie is now in fifth place on the NBA's list of all-time assists leaders, leapfrogging both Mark Jackson and Steve Nash in one game.
It's not like there haven't been players who have played for two decades in the NBA before. LeBron James is currently in his 23rd season. And if James can play that long, there's no reason why Brodie can't too. While he doesn't have the rings, he's definitely as big a legend and still playing great ball.
Keep in mind that Westbrook was a player who no one wanted leading into the season. The Nuggets basically turfed him and no other team was stepping up. The Kings were the only team that fans know of who made any kind of offer to Brodie, and it's a good thing they did.
Without Westbrook at starting point guard, this season might have gone even worse for Sacramento than it did. Yes, that is entirely possible. Plus, he has been responsible for some of the best moments the Kings have had this season, a consistent source of celebration as he makes more history.
Russell Westbrook keeps making NBA history in Sacramento
While he's hit numerous benchmarks this season, his most recent achievement involves assists. Specifically, Westbrook's place on the All-Time NBA Assists Leader list. Going into the Kings' brutal loss against the Spurs, Brodie was sitting in seventh place, which is pretty darn respectable.
After the game, Westbrook found himself in fifth place. He picked up 10 assists in that game, his fourth time in March with a double digit total in assists. That gave him enough to move past a pair of retired legends in Mark Jackson and Steve Nash in one shot.
Now, the only players ahead of him are LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and John Stockton. And LeBron is last guy still collecting assists on that list. That being said, it's unlikely either James or Westbrook will catch Stockton before they retire. He's three thousand assists ahead of second place.
Breaking these records has had a lot to do with playing on the Kings. It's hard to imagine any other team putting him on the starting lineup and giving Westbrook the kind of minutes he's getting. Without that, it may have been a much different season for him.
