The hits just keep coming for the Sacramento Kings in the preseason. What was billed as a comeback is looking more like a step backwards after losing all contests so far. With Sabonis leaving the game against the Clippers early due to a hamstring injury, it might be a minute before it gets better.
In their third preseason game, the Kings were taking on the controversy-plagued Clippers team. While it seemed like Sacramento had a chance at one point in the game, the Clippers ended up blowing them out with a score of 109 to 91.
Going zero and three in the preseason is a tough pill to swallow, particulalrly for a new head coach and a new front office trying to get the franchise back on track. Injuries to starters sure isn't making things any easier for the Kings to get their footing, though it's not their only problem.
Injury-plagued Kings
The first major injury happened in the second preseason game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Keegan Murray sustained a left thumb injury that forced him to exit early. It was later revealed to be a UCL tear that could keep him out up to six weeks.
Sabonis, on the other hand, left the game against the Clippers with a hamstring injury. There has been no update so far as to the extent of that injury or how long it may take for Sabonis to recover. Being that he's the team's biggest star, the coaches won't take any chances with this one.
It was especially painful for fans because Sabonis was looking like himself for the first time in the preseason. The man had 15 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and one steal. The double-double machine was back in full effect.
The Kings' tough preseason
It isn't just about injuries, though. Doug Christie came into training camp with a strong message about defensive focus that has yet to be realized on the court. Dennis Schroder has been largely quiet and mostly ineffective during all three games. And signing Russell Westbrook isn't fixing anything.
The unbalanced roster issues that have plagued the Kings for several seasons remain. They have a multitude of guards, yet no clear, dominant point guard after trading both Tyrese Haliburton and De'Aaron Fox away. They want a strong defense but don't bring in strong defensive players.
Sabonis being injured is a problem, without a doubt. And Christie will likely sub in Dario Saric to cover for him, though he is hardly a replacement for Domantas. Until the Kings rebalance the roster, injuries to players like Sabonis and Murray will continue to wreak havoc on their roster.
