Sacramento Kings are shaking up their coaching staff
By Mat Issa
In June, the Sacramento Kings agreed to an extension with their head coach, Mike Brown, solidifying the position for the next few seasons.
However, even with the stability the Kings have at the top, Brown's staff has seen a lot of turnover this offseason, losing multiple assistants over the last few months. The biggest of those losses was defensive guru Jordi Fernandez, who accepted his first head coaching gig with the Brooklyn Nets.
On top of the loss of one of Brown's most trusted assistants, Fernandez took two other assistantswith him to Brooklyn.
On Monday, it was reported that the Kings are counteracting these losses by reshuffling the hierarchy of their current roster of coaches.
The Offensive Mastermind Gets A Much Deserved Promotion
Of all the names listed in the tweet above, the one that stands out the most is that of longtime NBA coach Jay Triano. Triano has spent over two decades in the NBA as an assistant and head coach, working for the Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets, and, of course, the Kings.
Throughout his career, Triano has made his bones as an offensive genius. In fact, many people credit him as the brains behind the Kings' offense that ranked first in offensive rating in 2022-23.
Now, Triano is being rewarded for his impact by receiving a promotion that will make him Brown's official right-hand man. That means that if Brown gets tossed from a game or has to miss a game for some reason, Triano will be the one to fill his shoes.
Triano has spent 308 games as a head coach in the NBA (so far), posting a 108-200 record (win percentage of 35.1%) in those contests. To this point, Triano has never been the head coach of a playoff game.
Kings G-League Affiliate Gets A New Head Coach
A few days before these changes were announced, the Kings also hired a new head coach for their G-League Affiliate, the Stockton Kings. To fill this position, the Kings added Quinton Crawford – a 33-year-old who has spent the last seven years as an assistant coach, including stops with the Suns and Los Angeles Lakers (he was with the Lakers during their 2019-20 championship run).
