New Netflix show may help Sacramento Kings get national recognition
By Mat Issa
The Sacramento Kings are a good team (they have averaged 47 wins per season over the last two years), but the league doesn't seem to care. We get very few nationally televised games, and it would take a miracle for us to get on the NBA Christmas Day slate.
A big reason for this (outside of us being a small market team) is that the Kings lack players with large fanbases outside of Sacramento. De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are great players, but you see very few people on the East Coast rocking their uniforms. Meanwhile, everyone respects DeMar DeRozan, but few people obsess over him the way they might for someone like Stephen Curry.
However, that could all change after this new Netflix TV show hits living rooms worldwide.
Domantas Sabonis Set To Be Apart Of New Netflix TV Show "Starting 5"
This October, Netflix is debuting a ten-part sports series that will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 season from the perspective of five NBA stars. Those players are LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, and none other than Kings' star big man, the aforementioned Domantas Sabonis.
According to NBA.com, "The series captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy. James pushes himself harder than ever to stay healthy – and dominant – in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise. Butler’s relentless drive propels the Heat, Sabonis anchors the Kings with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the Celtics in their quest for a record 18th championship.Starting 5delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball."
Why This Matters For The Kings
Not everyone stays up late to watch the Kings play on League Pass. But everyone will tune into a Netflix series that gives you a never-before-seen look at life as an NBA player, particularly when that series includes (arguably) the greatest player of all time (and the NBA's new darling in Edwards).
Sabonis will benefit from being in a series with such popular players. The fans who aren't super familiar with him will watch the series, become drawn to him (because, by all accounts, he's a great hang), and then start tuning in to the Kings more often to keep up with their new favorite player (which is perfect because we project to be even better this year than last).
And once the league sees that more people are tuning in to watch the Kings, they will finally give us the national TV respect that we deserve.
