After completing the one-year deal he signed with the Sacramento Kings this offseason, veteran big man JaVale McGee is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. And although it will likely be another month or so before we know McGee's ultimate decision, this recent announcement may have offered up some insight into what the center plans to do next.
Every year, McGee hosts a charity softball game for his foundation: "JUGLIFE Foundation." A charitable organization whose main objective is to ensure that as many people as possible can have access to clean water.
Anyway, on Monday, Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report tweeted out that this year's event would be taking place in Sacramento.
What Does This Mean For His Future In Sacramento?
While the most important thing here is the philanthropy that McGee is engaging in, we can also use this news update to read the tea leaves for McGee's future.
And here, the fact that McGee is doing the event in Sacramento is telling. He's from Flint, Michigan, so you can't chalk it up to it being at/near his hometown. McGee has also been on eight NBA teams other than the Kings, so you can't say that Sacramento is the only city he has NBA ties to.
That means that McGee may be leaning toward re-signing with the Kings or that he may be contemplating retiring and planting permanent roots in Sacramento (after all, he turns 37 in January).
McGee is far from the player he was in his heyday. However, he can still provide some depth off the bench as a third big man on a veteran minimum deal. Last season, in 46 games, McGee averaged 7.4 MPG, 4.0 PPG, and 2.7 RPG.
The veteran minimum for a player of McGee's longevity in 2024-25 is about 3.3 million dollars (about 2.3% of the salary cap).
