A star free agent is interested in the Sacramento Kings
By Mat Issa
Sacramento is a cool city. However, it isn't Los Angeles or New York. All-NBA caliber players aren't lining up to move to Northern California.
That's what makes this recent development pretty cool for the Sacramento Kings. A star unrestricted free agent who could go virtually anywhere he wants (so long as he's willing to take a pay cut) is interested in going to the Kings.
And if you hadn't guessed from the thumbnail, that star player is none other than DeMar DeRozan.
DeRozan Could End Up Choosing The Kings Over The Lakers And Clippers
As Sean Cunningham noted above, DeRozan is a six-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection. Over the course of his half-decade-long career, he's symbolized everything that being a star player in the NBA stands for.
And our Kings are the frontrunner to land DeRozan in a sign-and-trade, despite multiple other teams – like the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers – showing interest in acquiring the veteran forward.
The Kings being ahead of those last two teams (the Lakers and Clippers) is especially interesting because DeRozan grew up 20 minutes outside of Los Angeles (in Compton). So, DeRozan could end up choosing the Kings over playing in a city that has been long coveted by other stars and is located right near where he grew up.
Now, it is worth noting that the Kings cap situation (they are not currently above the first or second apron) makes it so that they can give more money to DeRozan than other teams. Still, him picking the Kings over anyone else would not only bolster our chances of making a run this season. But it could also increase our odds of landing a marquee player in free agency in free agency, as DeRozan is a respected veteran who many younger players aspire to emulate.
