#1 Keegan Murray
Anyone who has been reading A Royal Pain for some time now should have been able to guess who I would have as number one on this list. Keegan Murray is the most untouchable player on this team.
Sabonis and Fox are better players than Murray, but they are flawed stars. Sabonis is a limited defender at the position where defense is the most important. Meanwhile, Fox is a lead creator who is a good (but not great passer) and a shakey 3-point shooter.
On the flip side, Murray is the perfect kind of role player. He's got size (6'8), a deadly jumper (career 38.4% 3-point shooter), the ability to attack closeouts (59th percentile true shooting on drives, per Thinking Basketball), lockdown defense (90th percentile Defensive Estimated Plus-Minus, per Dunks & Threes), and excellent secondary rim protection chops (64th percentile block rate). Murray is the perfect type of role player.
This past season showed us the value of having elite two-way wings/forwards (like Derrick White and OG Anunoby). Murray isn't exactly there, but he has all the indicators of someone who will be in that tier someday.
Murray still has two years left on his rookie deal, and based on my formula, he's got by far and away the best contract on the team. Yes, the team will have to give him a sizable raise once it's over. But given how easy it is to build around players like him (and that his age – he turned 24 last week – allows him to fit on any timeline the Kings may be on), Murray is the most untouchable player on the Kings' roster.
