With a massive rebuild hopefully coming, the Sacramento Kings are going to have to ask some hard questions. That's not just about their roster but every part of the operation. While Russell Westbrook might only have a couple of years left on the court, he might be the coach the Kings need to thrive.
After 17 seasons in the NBA, Westbrook was asked to take his player option and leave the Nuggets for unknown reasons. The only team that seemed interested in his services was the Kings, who took their time signing him. Sacramento officially brought him on board just days before the season.
While most people questioned the decision, signing Westbrook turned out to be one of the best choices they've made in a long time. He has added to both his double-double and triple-double totals, set new records, and has been the best part of the 2025-2026 Kings' season.
What has been the most interesting part of his time with the Kings is the leadership role Russell has taken on. Westbrook is the most senior and experienced player on the roster. They definitely seem to play better when he's the starting point guard, directing the team on the floor.
Westbrook could be the Kings' future
Keeping in mind that his current run is incredibly impressive, Westbrook isn't going to be playing in the league forever. He likely only has a couple of seasons left after this one, assuming he stays healthy and competitive. An 18-season run is already gosh darn impressive.

Once Westbrook retires, he should consider stepping in as an NBA coach, preferably for the Kings. No one has ever played the game quite like him, and he has a lot to teach the next generation. Plus, few have had as successful a career or played basketball with such passion or intensity.
This could be especially good for the Kings, who are rumored to be starting a massive rebuild. That means new players, many of them rookies or still incredibly early in their careers. They'll need the guidance of someone who knows the NBA from a myriad of angles. That's Westbrook.
The future for the Kings is foggy at the best of times. Fans are hopeful that a rebuild is finally on the way, and it will finally turn Sacramento into a team worth rooting for. What is clear is that the Kings are better with Russell Westbrook there, either on the roster or coaching it.
