By now, you've probably heard that the Sacramento Kings lost the tiebreaking coin flip with the Utah Jazz over who got fourth pick in the upcoming draft lottery. You've probably also seen people acting like the Kings' world has ended. It hasn't. It will take more than one coin flip to shut this rebuild down.
First and foremost, no one actually flipped a coin. It's important that gets put to bed immediately. When teams are tied for draft lottery spots, the NBA has a random drawing using ping pong balls. The problem is that "random ping pong ball drawing" doesn't have the same ring to it as "coin flip."
Regardless, the Kings and Jazz were tied for fourth. As such, the NBA had their so-called coin flip to determine who would be fourth and who would be fifth. In true Kings' fashion, they came up short and will get the fifth pick at the NBA Draft Lottery on Sunday, May 10.
While Sacramento will still end up with a top nine pick, this does decrease their chances of being in the top four. Their best odds are still the seventh pick at 25%, with picks one through four ranging from 11.0% to 11.5%. Ironically, they only have a two percent chance of getting the fifth pick.
Everyone needs to calm down about the Kings' position
Not surprisingly, a lot of Kings' fans are freaking out online about Sacramento losing the coin flip. It's understandable as every loss of any kind is just a little more salt in the open wound that is being a fan of the Sacramento Kings. It's not an easy way to live one's life.
Still, it's not the end of the franchise or the rebuild. This is a draft absolutely loaded with a talent pool that runs deep into the second round. The Kings will do well with all three of their picks this year, particularly with the mentality head coach Scott Perry is approaching the situation with.
Perry's focus is taking the best player available when Sacramento's chance to pick arrives. While he might have specific players and positions in mind, the goal is just to get top talent and go from there. It could be someone who fits the roster. It could also be someone who would help in trade talks.
The Kings did incredibly well in the 2025 NBA Draft, picking up Nique Clifford in the first round and Maxime Raynaud in the second. They also scored big by signing the undrafted Dylan Cardwell. What ever pick Perry ends up with, it's safe to say he'll make a good, and possibly unexpected, choice.
