The Sacramento Kings' season is over and done after missing the postseason by a country mile, and a wide one at that. With several problems to fix, there may be an opportunity to revisit one issue. Depending on how the playoffs go, the Raptors may want to discuss Domantas Sabonis again.
Prior to the beginning of the 2025-2026 NBA Season, pretty much everyone was concerned about the state of the Kings. They had a new head coach, a new general manager, and basically the same imbalanced roster that couldn't get it together in 2024-2025. It didn't look good.
This season went about as bad as expected, possibly worse. An ongoing barrage of injuries utterly tore up anything close to a game plan. Even when the roster was somewhat complete, they weren't clicking. And the head coach was having problems connecting with his players, especially the vets.
In the later part of the season, the rookies and young guns found a rhythm together and started winning a few games. The key was certain veterans who don't fit the new program not being on the court. The main names on that list are Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis.
The Raptors may want to talk about Sabonis in the offseason
Unlike Sacramento, Canada's only NBA franchise has made the playoffs. The Raptors are the fifth seed in the East and will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. Toronto has to be feeling confident in this matchup, as they won three out of three regular-season games against the Cavs.
That being said, this is a young roster that doesn't have a lot of playoff experience, and the lights of the postseason are a lot brighter than the regular season. How the Raptors perform will define what decisions they make over the summer to become even more competitive in 2026-2027.
Before the 2026 trade deadline, there was some interest on the part of the Raptors in Sabonis. While he's not much of a defender, he can score, rebound, and even be a solid passer. Being that the Raps already have one of the toughest defenses in the league, Sabonis' offense could help them.
At this point, the former All-Star doesn't really fit the program in Sacramento. That doesn't mean he can't be a big part of another team's success. If the Raptors are still interested in adding Sabonis to their ranks, there is a conversation to be had between the two teams in the offseason.
