As the Sacramento Kings prepare for 2026-2027, there are a surprising number of moves still to be made. Even a potential trade with the Raptors that would open up space to convert Adam Flagler and Jonathan Mogbo to standard NBA contracts is lurking. It's a compelling rebuild strategy.
Before Scott Perry became the general manager of the Kings, he filled the same role with the Knicks. He might not have been there for the title, but he did play a part in turning New York back into a championship franchise. That includes signing Jalen Brunson to the team back in 2022.
One of Perry's previous decisions with the Knicks was to draft RJ Barrett, an impressive young shooting guard currently playing for the Raptors. The rumors have long been that Perry wants to reunite with Barrett on the Kings. That wouldn't be a surprise as Perry is a big relationship guy.
Barrett is currently on an expiring contract with Toronto, who is already moving Ja'Kobe Walter into place to take over for him. The Kings could easily put together a trade package that includes Malik Monk, Daeqwon Plowder, and Nique Clifford to add Barrett to the roster. This creates opportunities.
Elevating the Kings' two-way players
During the offseason, Sacramento filled two of their three two-way spots with Flagler, a shooting guard, and Mogbo, a power forward. Both players are young, versatile, and fit the rebuild nicely. And that proposed trade with the Raptors gives the Kings room to sign them to full NBA contracts.
The bigger issue is the payroll, as Sacramento is barely managing to stay below the first apron and the luxury taxes that come with it. That's the downside of having massive contracts on your books. Fortunately, converting two-way contracts to standard contracts is relatively cost-effective.
The Kings would have both the financial room and the roster spots to add Flagler and Mogbo to the main roster. Even more compelling is the fact that this would leave their two-way contracts wide open to add new players the Kings want to get in their pipeline. It's a huge opportunity for development.
As it stands right now without the trade, Sacramento still has a single two-way contract waiting to be filled. Given the amount of talent that wasn't drafted in 2026, there's a lot of options out there. That gives the Kings even more reasons to elevate Mogbo and Flagler to the next level.
