The Sacramento Kings are a team looking for big moves on a budget during the offseason. That means making some risky moves that could pay off in a huge way. The front office should look no further than point guard Yuki Kawamura, who has the potential to be a great player for this team.
Kawamura turned heads as a member of Japan's national basketball team at the 2024 Summer Olympics. That led to him being added to the Memphis Grizzlies for a season before signing on with the Chicago Bulls in the summer of 2025. A lot of that time has been spent in the G League.
At five feet and eight inches, Kawamura is well under the average height for a point guard in the NBA, which is between six feet two and six feet three. That has prevented him from getting bigger opportunities so far despite the incredible set of skills he brings to the table.
He is an impressive floor general who drops times and rains threes. Kawamura is fast, has a quick shot release, and has a high basketball IQ. The same speed and reflexes that make him great on offense also make him a disruptive force on defense. And he's only two years into the NBA.
Kawamura brings the energy the Kings need
The Kings are trying to get their rebuild running full steam, but their payroll is going to be an issue. While some free agents will end up walking, Sacramento will also want to keep some of them, as well as the upcoming draft. Plus, they need to move a couple of big, annoying contracts.
That's what makes Kawamura so appealing. He's a restricted free agent on a two-way contract with a salary well under $400,000. For the Kings, he is a highly affordable point guard who is only 25 years old, brings a ton of ready-to-go skills, and is nowhere near his development ceiling.
This is someone who could fit right into the Kings' rebuilding roster as a reliable secondary point guard without missing a beat. And he's an affordable restricted free agent, which is rather important considering Sacramento's money problems. It's an opportunity the Kings cannot ignore.
Kawamura's name has come up in connection with Sacramento before, but nothing happened in that regard. Now is the time for the Kings to make the move and sign Kawamura up. Plus, he would fit in nicely with Sacramento's Beam Team crew as they continue to grow and develop.
