One of the highlights of the Sacramento Kings' 2025-2026 season has been watching Russell Westbrook's late career resurgence. In last night's loss to the Suns, Westbrook became the highest-scoring point guard in the history of the NBA, taking the title from the legendary Oscar Robertson.

Throughout his career, Westbrook has had many detractors despite one of the most impressive resumes in NBA history. He's a former league MVP, a nine-time All-Star, a two-time All-Star Game MVP, a two-time scoring champion, a three-time assists leader, and so much more.

None of that has slowed Westbrook's haters down in the least, particularly going into his 18th season. After his departure from the Nuggets, quite literally the only team in the league to offer Russell a spot was the Sacramento Kings. And he has continued to grow his own legend all season.

Since taking over as the starting point guard, Westbrook can't seem to stop making history. He keeps moving up all-time leader lists in various categories, not to mention adding to his already impressive double-double and triple-double totals. Now, he's taken another step towards icon status.

Russell Westbrook makes even more history on the Sacramento Kings

During the course of last night's game with the Phoenix Suns, Westbrook picked up enough points to take over the number one spot on the list of the highest scoring point guards of all time. For years, it was Oscar Robertson with 26,710 points. Now, Russell has 26,711 and will keep climbing.

Being that Westbrook is still active and has made it clear he has no plans to retire any time soon, his total will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. That being said, the same is true for Stephen Curry, who is currently in third on the same list with 26,103 points. No lead is safe in the NBA.

For Kings' fans, signing Westbrook was probably the smartest move Sacramento made in the offseason. He has played well and proven to be a good starting point guard. More than that, watching him make history over and over as part of the team has given them something positive to focus on.

If nothing else, the Sacramento Kings will now be tied to Russell Westbrook and his already amazing legacy. Given how brutal the rest of the 2025-2026 season has been for the Kings so far, Westbrook providing fans with something to cheer about has been shockingly important for the franchise.
