The Sacramento Kings had a surprisingly quiet offseason. And the few moves they did make were questionable at best, such as trading Jonas Valanciunas away. That one will come back to bite the front office in their collective behinds.
Additionally, that same front office spent a good portion of the summer trying to convince other teams to take Malik Monk or DeMar DeRozan. There were no takers.
The main reason for those attempted moves was reputedly wanting to free up space to bring in Russell Westbrook. That strategy might be in trouble as there might be another suitor for the veteran point guard.
Russell Westbrook to the Rockets
In a tragic turn of events for the Houston Rockets, Fred VanVleet suffered a torn ACL and may miss the entire season. Everyone hopes that Fred has a quick recovery and wishes him all the best.
With VanVleet on the bench, there's a potential search for a new veteran point guard to help lead the relatively young Rockets team. That could be Westbrook.
This move would reunite the former MVP with his former OKC running buddy, Kevin Durant. The Rockets picked the living legend up in the offseason.
The Kings never needed Westbrook
No one was really sure why the Kings were so fixated on bringing Westbrook in. While he would bring in needed athleticism and playmaking, his inconsistent shooting and defensive focus would also be a problem.
On top of that, Westbrook's prime years are behind him. While he still has moments of absolute brilliance on the court, he's not the player he used to be. The Kings need to be building for the future, not looking to the past for answers.
It's hard to see Westbrook being a good fit for the current incarnation of the Kings. But Westbrook playing again Durant again does have a certain epic story vibe to it, one that could define the NBA season whether it works out or not.
