Maxime Raynaud has been one of the best parts of the Sacramento Kings' season, not to mention a prime example of how valuable second-round draft picks are. During last night's win over the Bulls, Raynaud collected his 14th double-double as well as having an impressive defensive performance.
When it comes to Sacramento's rebuild, the future is most definitely now. Young players like Dylan Cardwell, Nique Clifford, Daeqwon Plowden, Devin Carter, and possibly Killian Hayes could all play big roles in that process. And there's no doubt that Maxime Raynaud is a key part of the whole plan.
The Kings may have selected him deep in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, but he's playing like a top-five pick. His performance in Sacramento has been noticed by fans, the coaches, and the front office. On top of that, the entire league has been paying attention to Raynaud's work.
While he was unfortunately passed over for a spot in the Rising Stars tournament during All-Star Weekend, Raynaud has become a regular fixture on the Kia Rookie Ladder. Winning Rookie of the Year remains a long shot at best, but seeing him in the top five is definitely encouraging.
Raynaud earns his keep against the Bulls
Maxime's performance in December was incredible, but both February and March are looking pretty good as well. He's played four games this month and has double-doubles in three for them. That gives him a total of 14 double-doubles on the year, which is impressive by anyone's standards.
On top of that, Raynaud's defense has seen drastic improvements in recent weeks. His overall play on that end of the court has been exceptional, becoming a force in the paint but quick enough to challenge players at the arc. Last night, he even picked up three blocks and a steal.
With Sabonis leaving Sacramento as soon as the Kings can find a way to move him, Raynaud has proven himself to be an effective double-double machine. To make the situation even better, Maxime may already be a better defensive player than Domantas, though that's not a high bar to get over.
The long-term strategy in Sacramento is to rebuild the team with a focus on youth, versatility, and defense. There is no center who fits that ethos better than Maxime Raynaud, something he keeps proving every time he steps on the court. Raynaud is the future of the Sacramento Kings.
