After a five-game home stand that resulted in four losses, the Sacramento Kings were booed off the court by the fans. But it wasn't the players the fans were booing. It was the organization as a whole, from top to bottom, because this is a complete system failure for the entire franchise.
The Kings currently have a record of three and nine, and are about to start a five-game road trip that features stops in Minneapolis, San Antonio, Denver, and Oklahoma City. Their best chance for a win on the road is against the Grizzlies, but even that can't be counted on at this point.
Their most recent home loss was their fourth in a row. On top of that, it was the Kings' third major blowout of their home stand. The season got off to a rough start, but things actually seem to be getting worse. It's hard to blame Sacramento's fans for being a little perturbed.
Kings' fans are angry
After getting completely blown out by an Atlanta Hawks team without Trae Young, Sacramento's fans were vocal about their displeasure. They were fueled by years of inconsistency, instability, and failure, particularly the disappointment of a series of home games that went from bad to worse.
This wasn't the first time this season the fans have gotten loud. When the Kings were leaving Keon Ellis on the bench way too much, fans in Golden 1 Center let the coaches hear about it. They chanted for him until he finally started getting minutes on the court.
Sacramento fans are exhausted. They are tired of hoping for something better and not getting it. They are done with the promises that something will change, but it doesn't. Just keep in mind that they aren't mad at the players; they are mad at a broken franchise that refuses to fix itself.
Kings' problems start off the court
Sacramento's roster actually has a lot of great players. The problem is that it's a poorly constructed team that is balanced towards offense over defense. Yet, the current direction is defense first on the court, rather than building a strategy that actually works for the players they have.
The front office put this team together. The coaching staff put this strategy together. The ownership put their stamp of approval on everything. And the players are the ones left holding the bag for all of it, trying to make this whole ill-conceived experiment work in some capacity.
The fans were not booing the players. They were booing a broken franchise that's owned, operated, and managed by people who can't acknowledge their own culpability in the situation. Yes, things need to change for the Kings on the court. They also need to change off the court for a rebuild to work.
