There aren't a lot of bright spots for the Sacramento Kings this season. It's 25% over, and they've lost roughly 75% of their games. What has been good is the play of stars like Keegan Murray and Russell Westbrook, who make a good duo. And the Kings might just break them up in the rebuild.
Keegan Murray missed the majority of the season so far due to a preseason injury to his left thumb that required surgery. Since returning, he has been an absolute beast, showing off his new aggressive approach at both ends of the court. Murray is becoming the superstar everyone knew he could be.
Russell Westbrook, on the other hand, has surprised everyone with not just his longevity but also his tenacity. He went from barely finding a roster spot to playing incredible basketball. Not only has he taken over as the starting point guard, but he's also still collecting triple-doubles.
The two of them are slowly becoming an interesting one-two punch for the Kings, working together to run the offense and trying to get something going on defense. As they work together longer, a real connection will build between them. That's assuming they get the time to develop one.
A Kings' rebuild might be coming for this duo
Anyone who pays even the remotest amount of attention to the NBA knows that the Kings have desperately needed a rebuild for several years. Their imbalanced roster, particularly a few of their starters, has trouble implementing any sort of consistent defensive presence.
The Kings' front office has made it clear that they are open for business, meaning they're ready to hear trade offers on basically any player. That reputedly doesn't include Keegan Murray and Nique Clifford, though there are a few other players who should be on the no-trade list.
While there have been no rumors of any other team looking at Westbrook, the Kings should plan to keep him. He will be a key veteran presence and has great production. But the Kings also should be following through on the rhythm developing between him and Murray. It could be big for them.
There's no way to know for sure what will or won't happen. That's why it behooves Sacramento's front office not to get too trade crazy. Westbrook is playing great for them on an NBA veteran minimum contract. He's the best value on the team right now, and could be the key to developing Murray.
