As the trade deadline waits just over the horizon, rumors are flying fast and furious. One of them has the Timberwolves open to parting ways with Rob Dillingham. While the point guard hasn't had the best season, he still has huge potential and the kind of upside the Sacramento Kings are looking for.

Rob Dillingham was drafted eighth overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 2024, but was traded to the Wolves that evening for picks. Minnesota really wanted Dillingham on the roster as the young point guard seemed like a good fit for what they were trying to put together.

He ultimately spent a large portion of the 2024-2025 season in the G League playing for the Iowa Wolves. Dillingham would go on to play 49 games for Minnesota, though his minutes seemed to decrease quite dramatically, and his development floundered a bit.

That has become more obvious during the 2025-2026 season as Dillingham appears to have regressed somewhat. As such, the Wolves are reputedly interested in trade conversations about Rob, considering that they don't seem to be doing much with him in any capacity.

Rob Dillingham could be a good fit for the Sacramento Kings

Keeping all of that in mind, Dillingham still has a lot of upside to work with. He's only in his second season, and would likely thrive in an environment that offers him both more and consistent minutes. The Wolves might want to offer him that, but they can't considering the makeup of their roster.

That's where the Kings come in. They need a young point guard to develop as part of the rebuild, and Dillingham fits perfectly. He is an efficient three-level scorer, meaning he works well in the paint, the mid-range, and from beyond the arc. Plus, he's a brilliant playmaker with incredible handles.

Unfortunately, Rob's biggest weakness is on defense, but not because he's incapable of operating at that end of the court. He has the quickness and court IQ to be a good defender. That part of his game hasn't been developed yet, and Doug Christie could be the coach to make that happen.

The Kings need a young point guard to build around. and have several players the Wolves might be interested in. On top of that, Minnesota is motivated move Dillingham, which makes them a good trade partner. More importantly, Rob would be a much better choice for Sacramento than Trae Young.
