Hopefully, they're right.

After playing his first two games in a Sacramento Kings' jersey, Darius Acuff Jr. has a lot of fans. At the same time, there are more than a few people who are concerned by his defense. General manager Scott Perry isn't worried, though, as he believes Acuff will grow into the role. And he might be right.

The Kings might have had a terrible season in 2025-2026, but they walked away with the number seven pick in the draft. This allowed them to finally get the point guard the needed in Acuff, someone that pundits, coaches, and even his fellow players have referred to as a generational talent.

His first outing with the Kings definitely had those vibes. Acuff played in two out of the three California Classic games Sacramento was part of. He totaled up 47 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and two blocks. Those are solid numbers for the beginning of Summer League.

Keep in mind these were not just his first in the NBA games or as a King. They were his first games around his new teammates, some of whom won't be there in the fall. Others won't be on the court with him until the fall. Once Acuff gets into an NBA groove with his set roster, the sky is the limit.

Defense is the name of the game for Acuff's development

That is exactly what both Perry and head coach Doug Christie are banking on. Acuff's biggest weakness is his defense. He has all the skills and athleticism to be a great defender, but can't seem to put the pieces together. That's an issue Sacramento has had with their star players in the past.

In a recent interview NBC Sports California’s Deuce Mason, Perry talked about this exact concern. Basically, he believes that Acuff's competitive spirit and desire to be the best of the best will force him to become a solid defender within the defensive scheme Christie is putting together for Sacramento.

Over the past year, the Kings have brought in a lot more players with a defensive mindset. That includes Precious Achiuwa, Dylan Cardwell, Emanuel Sharp, and several more. These are the pieces to the defensive puzzle Christie has been trying to finish for the better part of two years.

Once Acuff is in the system with guys like Achiuwa and Cardwell, it is quite likely that his defense will improve quickly and dramatically. That being said, as long as he continues to be the offense's motor and keeps scoring, fans can probably overlook a couple of blown defensive assignments.
