Domantas Sabonis made his on court return to the Sacramento Kings after losing most of last season to injuries. While it was a quiet start for the All-Star big man, the chemistry between him and rookie point guard Darius Acuff was obvious. There's something there the Kings can capitalize on.

The conversation around Sabonis in Sacramento is confusing at best. He's a top 20 big man in the NBA who has been averaging a double-double every season since 2019-2020. Domas even averaged a double-double last season, and he only played 19 games. He's kind of a boss.

On the other side of the coin is his lackluster defense and the fact that a team has to run their offense through him for Sabonis to be effective. A major focus of the rebuild is on defense as well as developing a more sustainable and successful offensive model. Sabonis doesn't fit the bill.

With two years left on a very expensive contract, trading him will be nearly impossible. For now, the Kings have to work with Sabonis, something that will be a lot easier to manage with Acuff on the court. The rookie point guard and the All-Star veteran definitely have a vibe going on.

Acuff and Sabonis could be the Kings' dynamic duo

First off, you have to keep in mind that they didn't get a huge amount of time together in game one. Sabonis ultimately only played slightly over ten minutes against the Lakers. The Kings are easing him back into the mix because of his injury recovery, but he also had five fouls in a quarter and a half.

What fans did see of Acuff on the court with Sabonis was intriguing. The ball movement between them was great. Each enhanced the other on offense. Neither of them are particularly good defensive players, but they actually seemed to feed off each other a bit on that end of the court, too.

There is real potential in this pairing, which Acuff is going to need as he develops. It would be a little ironic if his veteran mentor turned out to be an All-Star, All-NBA center who led the league in rebounds from 2023 to 2025. Regardless, it's a dynamic Acuff can build a career off.

On top of that, it may change the trajectory of Sabonis's career. The assumption has long been that the Kings will get rid of him as soon as possible. If there's a real rhythm between him and Acuff, Sacramento will have to rethink that stance and decide if there is something long term with Domas.
