The Kings would have been better off with Zion Williamson than Ja Morant

It's not exactly a wide margin.

Two of the biggest NBA busts in the last 20 years are, without question, Zion Williamson and Ja Morant. Morant was caught up in trade rumors with the Sacramento Kings that fortunately didn't pan out. If the Kings had to choose between the two, Williamson would have been the better option.

Morant and Williamson are in completely different situations. Williamson has had consistent problems with conditioning, which have in turn led to numerous injury issues. He has played less than 50% of the potential games in his six-season career. That's not great, but it could be worse.

Then there's Morant. He has all the talent and skill in the world with the ego and debilitating arrogance to go with it. He has repeatedly gotten in his own way, going from the prospective face of the league to being so radioactive that the Grizzlies had a lot of problems trying to get a trade going.

The twist in this situation is that the Pelicans maintain that they have no interest in trading Williamson at all and still believe they can build a successful franchise around him. In the Morant situation, he has already been traded to the Portland Trail Blazers after the Kings made it clear the answer was no.

Sacramento would be better with Williamson on the roster than Morant

While the Kings are in the middle of a rebuild, they are looking for baggage-free players to work with. Sure, they needed a new point guard, but even Sacramento's situation wasn'tso bad that they had to resort to Morant. That would have been a massive train wreck waiting to happen.

Bringing in a power forward like Williamson would have made more sense. They were struggling with wing depth as badly as their point guard situation. And a move to Sacramento might have actually helped him with his conditioning issue. The food is great in Sactown, but it's not New Orleans.

The Morant scenario was potentially far more dangerous than Williamson being injured a bunch. Morant is reportedly locker room poison and can really change the team dynamic for the worse. Even if Williamson was on the bench, at least he wouldn't tear the team apart with his bad attitude.

It's important to reiterate that Williamson is not on the market at the moment, and Morant is now a Blazer. The point is that Sacramento always had far better moves than bringing in someone like Morant, who could have easily done more harm than good.
