This isn't a rebuilding season for the Kings. That would imply some effort had been put into creating a roster that could gel and mature over the next few seasons. And the lack of moves over the offseason certainly hasn't done much to push the roster forward.
Instead, they have a slapdash team weighted heavily towards a certain style of play. That's not a dig on the players themselves. There is some real talent on this roster. It just remains to be seen if the front office knows what to do with it.
After everything that happened during the 2024-2025 season, this is the time for a rebuild. What is actually happening is a continuation of last season's upheaval with no end in sight for fans.
The Kings are stuck in the storm
When a team fires a coach and a general manager while losing their top point guard, it wouldn't be a surprise for a complete rebuild to follow. That has most assuredly not happened on the Kings. Players pushed a more positive attitude at media day, but that might not be enough.
The issue is that the Kings made a few moves over the summer, none of them big, and nothing that will help the team flourish this season. In fact, the opposite might actually be the case, particularly after the loss of Jonas Valanciunas.
All of last season's changes threw what little balance the Kings had into absolute chaos. And the current front office doesn't seem to know how to calm things down so far. Fans will have to see what this season brings.
The Kings need to find a new path
Leading up to the 2025-2026 season's trade deadline, now is the time for the Kings' front office to start taking their rebuild seriously. Right now, it's hard to see what the future looks like for the Kings. They need to work away from the storm and towards the calm.
It's going to mean finding stability in the front office. It's going to mean building a balanced roster. It's going to mean the ownership taking a step back and letting people do their jobs.
This is not going to be a short process. The franchise is going to need to plan for significant amounts of time, effort, and a whole lot of difficult decisions that won't make sense to fans right away. But when it all comes together, it will be beautiful.
