How the Bucks trade opens a door in Boston for the Kings

There's a real opportunity here.

The Celtics being the runner-up for the services of Giannis Antetokounmpo could make things a little awkward at training camp this year. As such, Boston likely isn't done trying to trade Jaylen Brown. That will inevitably create opportunities for the Sacramento Kings, just not for Brown himself.

Finally, NBA fans have a resolution to all of this "will they, won't they" drama between the Bucks and Antetokounmpo. Assuming everything goes through, he will be a member of the Miami Heat next season. And the Heat only had to give up their depth and a haul of picks to pull it off. Uh oh.

Reportedly, the other team in the mix was the Celtics, who were offering up Jaylen Brown and a handful of picks. It definitely wasn't as versatile an offer, one that would put the Bucks in a very similar position to where they were with Giannis. That was one expensive mega star and no depth.

Assuming the Celtics don't find another trade partner for Brown, that means he heads to the 2026 training camp knowing his team is trying to move on from him. It happens. The league is still a business, and that era of the Celtics is over. The Kings could play a part in the next era.

Kings and Celtics need to have a conversation

Let's get Brown out of the way right now. There's no way the Kings are going to trade for him. He has three years left on a contract worth an estimated $183 million over that time. Sacramento is already in enough trouble with the salary cap. This would just make things so much worse for them.

That being said, if they can pull it off, he would be a huge addition to the roster. Brown would be one hell of an on-court leader for this young crew as well as a massive leap forward for the team's wing depth. The Kings would just have to get rid of Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and more.

The more likely scenario is that the Kings feed off whatever the Celtics are trying to do like a remora following a Great White Shark. A team interested in Brown that can't afford him might be willing to have a conversation about LaVine. Boston might be more interested in a chat about Malik Monk.

What the Kings do know is that the Celtics are prepared to make some big changes. How that pans out remains to be seen, so why not get in the mix? There's no harm in Scott Perry giving the Boston front office a call and seeing what he might be able to do to help them out.
