The Miami Heat recently made a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks to bring Giannis Antetokounmpo to South Beach. It is the biggest trade of the offseason, but it cost Miami their depth and future picks. They need to build around Antetokounmpo, and that means bringing in Zach LaVine.

There's no question that the Heat had to do something big and splashy. They have been hovering around the Play-In for years, with only one really great recent showing in the playoffs. After Jimmy Butler left, they lacked a second star to position alongside Bam Adebayo. They changed that.

While the Heat's flame was diminishing without Butler, the relationship between Antetokounmpo and the Bucks was souring rapidly. Their postseason power has been fading since Milwaukee's 2021 title win. Giannis wanted out, even though he wouldn't say it, and the Bucks needed to move on.

It all built up to a recent trade that saw the Heat give up four players, some of whom are already on the Bucks' trading block. Bringing in Antetokounmpo is a big move, but Miami now has some roster spots to fill. And a good use of one of those spots would be a shooter like Lavine.

Paring Antetokounmpo and LaVine has been in the cards for a while

The idea of putting LaVine with Antetokounmpo goes back to the 2026 Trade Deadline. Around that time, the Bucks were looking at LaVine. Their plan was to put the shooter on the court alongside Giannis to create space and give Milwaukee another dangerous scoring option.

Since LaVine is still on the Kings, that situation obviously didn't pan out. That was at a time when the Bucks and Antetokounmpo were nearing a split. Regardless, he's now on the Heat, and they definitely need reinforcements to place around their new duo of Adebayo and Giannis.

While LaVine is the height of mediocrity on defense, he is one heck of a shooter when put in a position to succeed. He would be a huge help to the Heat on perimeter shooting, not to mention floor spacing. LaVine's presence on the court would take some pressure off Giannis and Bam.

With their payroll looking a little rough at the moment, the Heat might have to crunch some numbers to find space for LaVine. But it would be worth the work. For the Kings, what matters most is moving on from LaVine. What they actually get back from the Heat is borderline irrelevant at this point.
