For this rebuild process to work, the Sacramento Kings need to look beyond the draft. That means paying close attention to what's going on in the G League with players like J.D. Davison. A former G League MVP and an NBA Champion, Davison could be the right young point guard for the rebuild.

J.D. Davison was selected 53rd overall in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. That's not exactly an auspicious number to be drafted at, but that doesn't change the fact that he made it to the league. He was actually on a two-way contract with Boston when they won an NBA Championship in 2024.

After that, Davison continued to play with Boston's G League team, the Maine Celtics. It was a superb season for him in Maine as he was named the 2025 NBA G League MVP, an honor he definitively earned. Unfortunately, that didn't stop the Celtics organization from waiving him in the offseason.

Davison would go on to sign a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets. He's only played a couple of games in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, but has logged many games with the Rockets. The problem is that he's not getting a lot of minutes. That could change on the Kings.

J.D. Davison would thrive on the Kings

Right now, Sacramento's starting point guard is Russell Westbrook, with their only substantial backup being Devin Carter. Malik Monk is usually the point guard for their secondary, but he is currently injured. Beyond that, Carter has a lot of development to do before he can assume such a key role.

When given the minutes in the G League, Davison's career averages were 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. The points are solid, but what's really interesting are the assists. Davison is a facilitator with a respectable three-point shot and quick hands on defense.

The Kings definitely need a young point guard with experience to both play back up to Westbrook and grow into the starting role in the future. Davison has all of the skills Sacramento needs. Plus, he's only 23, has been around the league for a few years, and is already a champion and MVP.

As it stands right now, J.D. Davison will be a free agent at the end of this season. For the cost of a two-way contract or a league minimum deal, the Kings would have a young point guard who could mesh well with the rookie and sophomore core Sacramento is already putting together.
