Several former members of the Sacramento Kings have been having problems finding new spots in the NBA. Well, you can now add Devin Carter to that list as the Atlanta Hawks recently waived him as they prepare for training camp. On the upside, he is a likely candidate to find a new team soon.
During this offseason, the Kings have parted ways with several players. Most notably was DeMar DeRozan, who Sacramento waived to make room on the roster and payroll. There were a few contenders for his services, but he ended up signing with the Denver Nuggets.
Others have not been so fortunate. Players like Drew Eubanks and Doug McDermott are still looking for their next opportunity. In the case of Eubanks, the Knicks have shown interest in signing him to add depth at the five. McDermott, on the other hand, has no reported irons in the fire.
They aren't the only players who recently parted ways with Sacramento who are struggling to find a new team. Training camp could help, but open spots are getting few and far between. Some players may have to look outside the NBA if they want to keep playing basketball professionally.
Devin Carter may now be on that same list
After Sacramento traded him to the Hawks to make payroll space, Atlanta waived the third-year point guard. No offense meant to Carter, but if the Hawks didn't want to keep Jonathan Kuminga they sure weren't going to hang onto Carter. It's still a rough position for the young point guard to be in.
Unfortunately, a return to the Kings is impossible. The CBA prevents a team from resigning a traded player for a year after the trade. The earliest Sacramento could look at bringing Carter back is in June 2027. That's assuming they even want to get him on the Kings again, which is unlikely.
The Boston Celtics have already shown interest in Carter. They signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract that will bring him to their training camp. From there, they could sign him to their main roster or a two-way contract with the G League. But that's not a thing until it's a thing.
For now, Carter can be added to the list of former Kings currently struggling a bit to find their way after leaving Sacramento. It looks like Carter should be able to get a new spot, which makes him luckier than other players who are heading towards the next NBA season unrostered.
