The Sacramento Kings have been linked to a potential Jonathan Kuminga trade in recent months. Nothing has come to fruition, but Sacramento could be a landing destination if the Golden State Warriors decide to move the young forward. Domantas Sabonis -- one of the Kings' best players -- recently made intriguing comments about Sacramento's upcoming plans.
"A lot has changed," Sabonis told reporters recently, via Matt George of ABC10. "A lot is probably still going to change. We're just going to wait and see until training camp."
Sabonis' comments obviously do not guarantee that Sacramento will end up trading for Kuminga. His comments do suggest that more moves could occur in the near future, though. Given the fact that the Kings are rumored to be interested in adding Kuminga, perhaps a deal may be able to come to fruition at some point down the road.
Kings' outlook moving forward
The Kings have dealt with overall inconsistency in recent seasons. They were hopeful that their Domantas Sabonis-De'Aaron Fox duo would lead them to a championship. Although Sacramento emerged as a playoff contender, the team has yet to take the big step forward and become a true threat to win the NBA Finals.
Fox was ultimately traded to the San Antonio Spurs this past season. Sabonis remains with the team -- and he is joined by stars such as DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine. Despite a number of big names on the roster, the Kings still need to address uncertainty before the upcoming season. Bringing in a 22-year-old such as Kuminga would help the team in 2025-26 and in future years.
Is there a sense of urgency?
The 2025-26 campaign will prove to be of the utmost importance in reference to determining the Kings' long-term outlook. Sabonis is under contract for three more seasons, but a difficult 2025-26 campaign for the Kings could lead to a complete overall rebuild of the roster. Sabonis is not currently being mentioned in trade rumors, but that could change if the Kings begin to trend toward a big rebuild.
They can avoid that by making a few more pivotal additions before the season. Sacramento could make some noise in the Western Conference with Sabonis leading the way. There is still no shortage of work left to be done, however. Sabonis' comments could mean that the Kings will address the question marks on the roster.
The Sacramento Kings will be one of the most fascinating teams to follow as the NBA offseason moves forward.
