The Sacramento Kings have a shocking number of issues to sort out during the offseason, such as what they're going to do about their various free agents. That includes Daeqwon Plowden, a two-way player who showed up big for the Kings. He has huge potential and has to be an offseason priority.
Calling the Kings' season a trainwreck doesn't quite do it justice. And the reasons why have been analyzed to death, starting as early as October 2025. The issues were apparent in the preseason and just kept getting progressively worse from there. It was a bad scene across the board.
That being said, there were more than a few positives, one of which was Plowden. He went undrafted in 2022 and ended up bouncing around the G League and NBA for the past few years while looking for a permanent home. He signed a two-way contract with the Kings for this past season.
It worked out well for Plowden and the Kings. As injuries mounted, he started getting a lot more minutes after the trade deadline. Some have described it as a breakout season. Plowden shot incredibly well from the arc, became a fourth-quarter stud, and dropped career highs like crazy.
Plowden is part of the Kings' present and future
Right now, the Kings are still stuck in the payroll quagmire created by their obscene contracts with Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis. This has left them with some hard decisions to make about several free agents, some of whom the front office definitely wants to hang onto if the numbers work.
Obviously, the top two names on that list are Russell Westbrook and Precious Achiuwa. Westbrook had an amazing season and is a key veteran presence for a rather young team. Achiuwa had a breakout season of his own and played incredibly well for the Kings throughout the season.
Number three on that same free agent list has to be Plowden. The Kings are looking for young players who can defend and shoot the three. That is literally Plowden. He's only 27, has the exact game Sacramento needs, and already has a rhythm with the team's existing young guns.
The biggest positive is that Plowden actually wants to play in Sacramento. Based on a recent anonymous player poll, roughly 10% of the league doesn't want to play for the Kings. The fact that Plowden does should not be taken for granted. Find the money and get him on a standard contract.
