It's been well-established that the Sacramento Kings are on the hunt for a new point guard, either through the draft or free agency. Frankly, they'll probably do both. On the free agency side of the equation, Anfernee Simons is the elite playmaker and shooter the Kings are looking for.

Over the past couple of seasons, Kings fans have gotten the luxury of watching two former point guards excel in the postseason. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers to the 2025 NBA Finals. And this season, De'Aaron Fox is helping guide the Spurs through the Western Conference Finals.

It would be easier to deal with if Sacramento had managed to solve their point guard dilemma. Currently, they are running Russell Westbrook as their starter with Devin Carter as his backup. That's fine, but Brodie is retiring soon, and Carter is a second-year player with a lot of development to do.

The Kings need someone who is ready to step into that role now and run with it for a few seasons through the rebuild. That could definitely be Simons, an eight-year veteran of the league who was initially drafted by the Blazers in 2018. And he has the skills Sacramento is looking for.

Simons is a prime free agency target for the Kings

What Sacramento needs in a point guard is someone who can facilitate for the team while also taking control and scoring on his own terms. That describes Simons perfectly. His versatility on offense should never be underestimated, much like his ability to elevate his teammates.

Simons' three-point shooting is deadly, and his ability to shoot off the dribble is frightening. The man is a complete shooter at all levels. Beyond that, his playmaking and off-ball movement have steadily improved year after year. This facilitated his transition from shooting guard to a combo point guard.

The main downside to Simons is his defensive capabilities. He has the size and athleticism to be a reliable defender, but sometimes struggles with consistency and focus. Simons has improved on defense over the years, but the best he'll be in this department is a serviceable part of the scheme.

That's not what the Kings need from Simons. He will give them elite scoring and playmaking, then maintain the team defensive strategy. On top of that, he's only 26 and has several great years left in his career. They'll just need to make some financial room for this free agent option.
