Over the past few years, the Sacramento Kings have lacked neither star power nor talent. The problem has been playing together as a team, a symptom of their unbalanced roster construction and revolving door at head coach. This season, the Kings have to find a rhythm as a complete unit.

During the Monte McNair era in Sacramento, the goal seemed to be to load the team with as many shooting guards as possible. Yet, the point guard situation had fallen apart. They traded Tyrese Haliburton to get Domantas Sabonis and drove De'Aaron Fox away with bad decisions.

It's taken time to figure out their next steps. This season, the Kings are running rookie Darius Acuff as their starting point guard with Ben Simmons backing him up. On top of that, the roster is a bit more balanced, though there is still work to do. Still, steps have been made towards legit improvement.

A big factor is the head coach position. Doug Christie is back this season, but has a team option in his contract for next season. If 2026-2027 doesn't go well, there's a real chance he doesn't see 2027-2028 as the Kings' bench boss. That revolving door position could turn one more time.

Stability leads to consistency which leads to success

Sacramento needs to start playing as a team. There were some individual success stories last season, but they rarely operated as a cohesive unit. That requires a level of consistency that comes from the stability of a properly constructed and balanced lineup being led by a solid head coach.

The Kings are definitely in the process of developing one of those two things. They are rebuilding around Acuff as well as other young players like Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell, Emanuel Sharp, and Alex Karaban. Plus, Sacramento has some interesting talent in the pipeline who will factor in.

Now, the goal has to be building that key consistency, something that falls to Christie. His first season as bench boss wasn't exactly great. That being said, he was dealing with the fallout from the disastrous 2024-2025 season in addition to an almost historic level of season-ending injuries.

Sacramento is giving Christie another chance in 2026-2027, but they can't afford to let him go another round if this team doesn't show improvement. Consistency and stability are important parts of success. It will be hard to establish if the Kings' head coach isn't capable of providing that.
