Trade Rumors: Should the Kings go after Jrue Holiday?
By Elaine Blum
What speaks against trading for Holiday?
Besides the offensive fit, other factors make trading for Holiday less than ideal. For starters, Holiday is already 33 years old and does not exactly fit the Kings’ timeline. At the same time, he is already in the last year of his contract and won’t be able to extend with his new team until the end of the season.
That extension would be costly, but first of all, you would have to be really sure that he will sign an extension with the team. Otherwise, the Kings would give up all their assets for a rental. There is a lot of uncertainty with this deal, which makes it a risky move for Sacramento.
All that might not matter as much to a win-now team like the 76ers, for example, but the Kings have not yet reached that point where it is worth giving up everything for one year of success.
Should the Kings trade for Jrue Holiday?
Jrue Holiday is an amazing player. He could be the piece to push several teams into true title contention. For the Kings, however, the question is whether it is truly worth giving up all those assets for a player who does not fit their timeline, plays the same position as their star, and might just leave after one season.
Right now, the answer is no. The Kings are still young and just made their first playoff appearance. They still have one or two seasons left until the pressure to win would justify such a move. For now, they should see what else Fox can do, what type of player Murray can grow into, and if Mitchell can have an offensive impact before trading him.
Until a younger, defensive-minded player on a longer deal becomes available, the Kings should save their assets.
