#5. 12/13/05 – Bonzi Wells @ Minnesota

This one is something of a hidden gem.

Bonzi Wells played one season for the Sacramento Kings and had an outstanding postseason performance in what was to be the Kings last playoff appearance for well over a decade. His season stats were average and he missed a large chunk of time due to injury, but he had one of the best game-winning shots in franchise history in December of 2005.

The Kings were in Minnesota taking on the Timberwolves with whom they had developed a bit of a rivalry with during the early part of the decade. Sacramento had been struggling to establish an identity after the departure of Chris Webber the season before and could have used a victory over a formidable opponent such as the Wolves.

Wells gave it to them. With two seconds left and the Kings down by one, Mike Bibby inbounded the ball to Brad Miller who took a dribble and then pawned the ball of to Wells who was covered in the corner in front of the Wolves bench. He threw up a desperation three-pointer over the outstretched arms of the defender and hit nothing but net. Wells seemed as surprised as anyone that it went in.

The win wouldn’t help for momentum purposes as the Kings lost their next five games, but they were able to recover in time to slide into the 8th seed. That playoff appearance gave us an even better buzzer-beater than this one. Stay tuned.
