The Sacramento Kings might be on the verge of getting back the player who was arguably their MVP in the first half of the regular season.

The Richaun Holmes Injury Saga has been a wild ride, as so many injury sagas have been for the Sacramento Kings this year. But the fifth year big man just might be on the verge of putting an end to his ailments.

The Kings announced on Saturday morning that Holmes’ status for tonight’s game in Portland has been upgraded to questionable from doubtful. Holmes has missed the last 25 games with a torn labrum in his shoulder, and the Kings have certainly missed his presence. He was arguably the team’s MVP for the better part of the first half of the season and had quickly become a fan favorite in Sacramento.

News of his imminent return is great for the Kings, but don’t count your chickens yet. We’ve heard this song and done this dance with Sacramento’s medical and training staff.

Back on February 3rd, there were some grumblings that Holmes was nearing a return after missing 12 games with what the team was then calling “shoulder soreness.” Holmes’ injury status went from questionable to doubtful to out, and we learned five days later that he had a torn labrum and that there was no accurate time table for his return.

But now, over 60 days since he was initially injured, Holmes seems poised for a return. Not only has the team upgraded his status, but he said that he was ready to go any time in a recent post-practice interview.

The handling of his and the injury to Marvin Bagley by the Kings medical staff has been questionable at very best, and the fan base would love for at least one of these unfortunate sagas to come to an end.

The morale of the team will be lifted knowing that they will be the healthiest they’ve been all season during the most important stretch, and Holmes will be able to fill holes that have been created in his absence. We probably won’t see him tonight in Portland, but keep an eye out for him on Sunday against Toronto.
