Sacramento Kings wing Harrison Barnes is looking extra scruffy these days, but there is a good explanation for the new look.

Have you seen Harrison Barnes lately? The Sacramento Kings starting small forward is looking a bit rugged these days, with his hair abnormally long and a beard that looks anything but maintained. There is a reason behind the unkempt appearance.

Back in mid-December, Barnes made a vow to not cut his hair or shave his face until the Kings get back to a .500 record, or the season ends, whichever comes first.

While we are not exactly sure what the exact date was when Barnes made his commitment, but mid-December was the last time that the Kings had a realistic shot at having an even record. On December 15th, the Kings were 12-14. They were trending upwards after a miserable start to the season, and it looked like Barnes might have been back to a baby face by Christmas, or the New Year at worst.

Yikes. The Kings dropped 15 of their next 18 games, and Barnes dropped the razors. By January 22nd, Sacramento was rocking a 15-29 record. Hopefully Mrs. Barnes likes her man to be scruffy.

Apparently, Barnes wants to turn this ship around and finally get rid of all of this hair on his face. In the Kings first game back from the All-Star Break, Barnes scored a season-high 32 points with an also-season high seven made three-pointers.

The hot start to the second half is a great sign for Barnes, was likely exhausted from his international summer and the subsequent season in which he has played in every contest so far. The Kings are going to need plenty of factors to break their way over the final 27 games of the season if they hope to sneak in to the playoffs, and one of the most important being the consistency and performance from the starting small forward position.

In all likelihood, the end of the season will come before the Kings get back to having a .500 record. That means that an already-shabby Barnes has nearly two more months of hair growth before he cuts it off.

We’re hoping for a miracle too, Harrison.
