The Sacramento Kings admitted defeat when they passed on the options of Harry Giles and Caleb Swanigan.

Let us dive straight into the reasons behind the Sacramento Kings’ decision to pass on picking up the option on Harry Giles. James Ham, Kings’ insider for NBC Sports, stated that Harry came into training camp out of shape and was bothered by an injury in his lower body.

The plan was for the Kings to give him enough time to heal. Even after missing his rookie year and going through this last summer to recover, Harry’s body continues to fail him.

What Does This Mean For Giles And The Kings?

Sacramento has invested time and energy to develop Giles. He has shown flashes of his potential when he can get on the court. But the biggest flaw for him wasΩΩzzzz not getting steady and consistent playing time. And when the team did need him, he was listed “OUT” with an injury.

There is still a chance that Giles can re-sign with the Kings, but the likelihood of that happening is slim. If Harry does have a breakout campaign this year, someone will likely scoop him up for a more lucrative deal.

Declining on Giles is a risk that the Kings are willing to take. When healthy and on the court, Giles brings energy and a versatile skill set that no center on the team has. He also is a smart player that makes great decisions whether he is passing the ball or shooting it. But if the report is true that Giles was out of shape and injured, none of it matters.

Caleb Swanigan Gets Declined Too

Another one of Vlade Divac’s blunder was when he traded Skal Labissiere for Caleb Swanigan. The trade made little sense even at the time. Right now, Swanigan is getting little minutes with the Kings while Labissiere is breaking his way into the rotation for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Not exercising Caleb’s option was an expected move by Sacramento. Looking to save money to keep De’Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley III was a must. The hard truth, Caleb has been a project that does not look like it will get better. Perhaps send him to the G-League so he can get consistent playing time and improve his game?

Final Thoughts

I believe Harry Giles has a future in the NBA as long as his health does not keep being an issue. When Harry got steady minutes, he showed an upward trend in confidence and play. I hope Harry and the Kings find a happy middle ground to keep him with the team. Get back on the court and show the fans what you can do to help us reach the postseason.
