Sacramento Kings: Is Richaun Holmes a part of the long-term picture?
By Rafe Wong
Richaun Holmes has been a great addition to the Sacramento Kings so far. Should he be part of the purple and white for the long haul?
The Sacramento Kings have been a mess. It has only been five games into the young season and they have already managed to turn their fanbase against them. They need to go back to playing with a chip on their shoulders when everyone doubted them.
Although the Kings have started the season out terribly, a positive among their struggles have been Richaun Holmes. With Harry Giles and Marvin Bagley III out with injuries, the Kings have had to rely on Holmes for more minutes in games. Throughout the 23 minutes he contributes on average, he has been outstanding due to the relentless energy he shows on both ends of the court.
In five games, he is averaging around 12 points and seven rebounds per contest while making about 68% of his shots from the court.
The numbers from Holmes will not blow anyone away, but when watching him play, he has been one of the best players on the Kings. The Kings have guys like De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield, and Bagley that they plan to keep on the team for many years to come. But should Holmes also be part of the mix too?
Is Richaun A Long-Term Solution?
I do not know whether Richaun’s’ long-term role will be playing with the starting lineup or coming off the bench, but he is a player that the Kings should try to keep in their future plans. It has not mattered what team Holmes has played for. He has been a ball of energy wherever he goes.
For the Kings, they have played with little to no passion throughout their first five games and have caused arguably the most frustration within their fans for quite some time. Pleasing Sacramento fans is not that hard. The team just needs to play with energy for 48 minutes a night. Holmes has done that and immediately has become a fan favorite.
Final Thoughts
Richaun Holmes’ chances of becoming a franchise player are steep, but he is a guy that every team should want and who the Kings need at this point. If the Kings are going to turn their struggles around, they need players who love the game and show it when they get their number called.
Holmes has been by far the most reliable in terms of effort. As a late-round pick, he has always played with something to prove, and the Kings need those type of players on board for their rebuild. He not only has been one of the more efficient players on the team but can be a future example of what the Kings are looking for in their players.
