The Sacramento Kings’ bad start just got a whole lot worse.

Wednesday’s game was supposed to be the gimmie. The teams that the Sacramento Kings lost to during their 0-4 start were formidable opponents, a small excuse for a big problem. But the contest against the Charlotte Hornets erases all excuses and makes one thing perfectly clear:

The Kings are bad.

The story of the game was the same one that you’ve heard throughout the first week of the season. Sacramento got off to a hot start with solid defense and hustle plays, and found themselves up by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter. They headed to the locker room with a 66-61 lead.

Then, like they have in every third quarter this season, the wheels fell off. The Kings went ice cold. The ball movement became stagnant. The Hornets were getting open three after open three, going 8 for 12 from deep in the period. When the quarter was over, Sacramento had been outscored 32-18 and trailed by nine going in to the fourth.

Things never picked up in the fourth. The offense was atrocious and the defense couldn’t stop a nosebleed. The Kings looked lethargic, uninterested. They settled for 1-on-1 possessions while the other four players stood idle. Bogdan Bogdanovic went 2 for 11 from beyond the arc and the Kings were 14 for 46 for the game. The Hornets were 16 for 32.

Their 0-5 record makes this the worst start to a Sacramento Kings season since 1990.
