3 Ways That The Buddy Hield Situation Hurts The Kings
Reputation
The Sacramento Kings need to do everything they can to avoid reverting back to their old “Kangz” ways.
The reputation of the Kings has been bad for well over a decade. Not only has the team been extremely underwhelming on the court over that span, but the front office has been mocked and criticized in nearly every decision that they have made.
While it will take many years for Sacramento to shed its negative reputation, they have begun to take baby steps in that direction. They traded Cousins for Hield. They drafted Fox and Bagley. They traded for Bogdan Bogdanovic. All of these moves have been solid decisions, though they haven’t done enough to change the perception of the Kings front office.
Just this last week, the Kings have received eye rolls and “here we go again”s in regards to the news that has surfaced: not only is the Buddy Hield situation ongoing, but there was a report released on Friday (subscription required) by Shams Charania that the Kings were “having buyers remorse” concerning the Harrison Barnes contract. This is turmoil that hasn’t shown its face over the last year, but a turmoil that Kings fans find all too familiar.
As mentioned previously, there haven’t been a lot of contract negotiations done by the Sacramento Kings in recent memory. A good showing in the Hield saga would do wonders for future negotiations, while turning their back on a building block (which happens to be your first big negotiation in years) would only damage the franchise’s reputation.
