Sacramento Kings: 3 Predictions On Cory Joseph’s Season
Cory’s impact on the team will not show up in the box score
Joseph is not going to put up gaudy statistics in any traditional basketball metric. Joseph also is not a tremendous athlete, shooter, or playmaker.
Well, then why are the Kings paying him more than $12 million a year?
Early in the offseason, rumors of the Kings’ interest in former All-Defensive guard Patrick Beverley swirled. Ultimately Beverely decided to re-up with the Los Angeles Clippers on a 3-year/$40 million contract, which was according to Beverley, less lucrative to what the Kings offered him.
In a similar vein to Beverley, Joseph is a dog on the court. He just makes winning plays whether it is diving on the floor for a loose ball or picking the pockets of opposing guards. Joseph is just a general annoyance to play against.
A lot of Joseph’s value cannot be quantified. He is generally pretty steady on offense. He can make open three-pointers at a decent clip and can get the ball where it needs to be. The value of having a steady player like Joseph who will not torpedo your offense can often be underappreciated.
There will be games where Joseph looks uninspiring on offense, but the one constant will be the effort he plays with on the defensive end. The Kings hope that Joseph’s combination of stellar defense and steadiness on offense will be a benefit for this team.
