Justin James & Kyle Guy

For the first time in a long time, the Kings do not have a highly-touted rookie making his team debut during training camp. After picking in the first round every year since 2000, Sacramento’s only selections in the 2019 Draft were second-rounders. While Vanja Marinković won’t be making his NBA debut any time soon, the other two second-round picks just might.

With the 40th pick, the Kings selected Justin James from Wyoming. James has good size and length for a shooting guard, and is known for his explosiveness around the rim. He uses his athleticism for interior defense and has a knack for blocking shots from undersized guards.

The Kings nabbed Kyle Guy with the 55th pick, another shooting guard, this time from National Championship-winning Virginia. Guy was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, and hit three straight free throws with less than a second left in the championship game to seal the victory for the Cavaliers.

Both players have the talent to at least make an NBA roster, though they join a crowded backcourt in Sacramento. But they are just one injury or rest day for a starter away from getting some real playing time. The third point guard listed behind De’Aaron Fox and Joseph is Yogi Ferrell, who is also listed as the third shooting guard by ESPN, despite not playing a single minute at any position other than point guard last season.

James and Guy will likely see plenty of playing time in the preseason as the Kings will look to keep their starters and rotation players as fresh as possible. If one or both of them can contribute to the Kings depth and possibly the rotation, the Sacramento Kings can consider the 2019 Draft to be a success.
