Sacramento Kings 2010s All-Decade Team
Point Guard – Isaiah Thomas 2013-2014
20.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists per game
Selecting Isaiah Thomas with the final pick of the 2011 NBA Draft was one of the best talent evaluating jobs that the Sacramento Kings staff had made in years. The three-time Pac-10 All-Conference selection had question marks about his size, nearly causing him to go undrafted.
Thomas was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in his first season, and averaged nearly 14 points in his second year. His best year with Sacramento, however, was his third.
In 2013-14, Thomas was the 17th leading scorer in the league at 20.3 points per game and averaged the 11th most assists. His season-high came in a loss against the Indiana Pacers in which he scored 38 points on 31 attempts as well as a perfect 10 for 10 from the free-throw line.
Thomas was part of a Sacramento Kings trio (along with DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay) that averaged over 20 points apiece, the first Kings trio to do so in the Sacramento era.
Thomas began to form a chemistry with Cousins, as the point guard was just as talented a facilitator as he was a scorer and fearless finisher. On many nights he was a human highlight reel, and was one of the most exciting young players in the NBA.
During the summer of the very next offseason, the Kings traded Thomas in one of the most questionable trades in Kings history. He eventually went on to be an All-Star in Boston and came in 5th in MVP voting for the 2016-’17 season.
Nonetheless, 2013-’14 Isaiah Thomas is our pick for starting point guard of the All-Decade Team.
