With the Sacramento Kings adding Richaun Holmes to their roster this summer, it creates a comfortable problem for the purple and white.

The Sacramento Kings are entering the 2019-20 season with playoffs on their mind, and for the first time in forever, they have a roster that is capable of achieving that goal.

Not only were the Kings able to develop their young talent in the right direction, but they also were successful in addressing needs that were present before the offseason.

One of the holes the purple and white needed to fulfill was finding a starting center after Willie Cauley-Stein decided to end his Sacramento tenure. This led to Vlade Divac signing Dewayne Dedmon to a three-year deal worth around $40 million. The Kings also signed Richaun Holmes to a two-year contract worth around $10 million.

To start the season, the order for centers will probably be Dedmon as the starter, Harry Giles as his backup, and Holmes as the third-string big. But even though that would be the case to begin the year, these roles have a good chance of changing as the season progresses. Richaun Holmes is the reason why.

Once the Kings’ free-agency period ended, arguably my favorite signing from the bunch was Richaun Holmes.

Holmes has not proven to be a starting center yet in his career, but he is a spritely young player that plays the ideal way the Kings want their big men to play. An athlete who can run the floor and have a nose for rebounding the basketball, protecting the rim, and finishing up plays in the interior.

Based on Holmes’ playing style, he seems to be a perfect fit when he gets his chance to play with Sacramento’s young core.

Final Thoughts

Once Holmes gets playing time from Luke Walton, I am sure he will make a strong case to earn more minutes. His athleticism and motor will earn him more playing time as the season progresses which will leave the Kings with a tough decision on how to distribute minutes between him, Dedmon, and Giles.

Although the acquisition of Holmes could create some controversy during the year, it is a good problem to have. The Kings have not had a solid group of centers since the DeMarcus Cousins days, but it seems like that position has good depth at the moment.
