Not many people will tell you that the Pelicans won the DeMarcus Cousins trade, but they were certainly saying so on February 20th, 2017.

Social media gives us the ability to react instantly to news and let the rest of the world know how we feel about it with the click of a button. This was certainly the case when the Sacramento Kings traded DeMarcus Cousins to the Pelicans in February of 2017.

Revisionist history is always interesting, especially in sports. There is a very successful Twitter account dedicated to bad takes called @OldTakesExposed, which reveals poor predictions from long ago. They should revisit the things that were said in the hours following the Cousins trade.

Presently, Sacramento Kings fans are generally happy with the direction of the franchise. They are considered to have one of the best young cores in the NBA, thanks in part to the trade itself. Meanwhile, Cousins has suffered multiple career-threatening injuries over the last year and a half and has recently been accused of domestic violence.

It is almost indisputable that the Kings won the Cousins trade, but there was no one saying so in the hours and days after it happened.

We went back and dug through one of the most popular posts in the history of the NBA subreddit, finding out what people thought about the trade just moments after the news broke:

"“Official: The Kings are the worst run franchise in sports” – /u/Grolgar“So my roommate is a Kings fan. How do I ask him for March rent before he kills himself?” – /u/FruitCakeSally“Even 2K would deny this trade” – /u/IAmTheRealLange“Um, yes, I’d like to report a robbery” – /u/TeXaSKiD4“Name a worse move in the last ten years” – /u/theangrylobster“BOOGIE IS FREE!!!” – /u/Seth-Carter"

Kings fans themselves were not exempt. It seemed that each one of them hated the trade, some even proclaiming their intentions to give up their Kings fanhood and side with a new team.

Some comments from Kings faithful:

"“no”  – /u/dardarwinx“end my f*cking life”  – /u/NinjaGodzilla“I’m done” – /u/recon_dingo"

"“I would be excited to see an AD/Cousins frontcourt if I wasn’t dead inside” – /u/Nefib“I’ve put up with the Kings for so long hoping for this front office to finally do the right thing. This is not it, I’m a Pels fan now” – /u/Ieatbabybears“Golden 1 is now officially for concerts and Disney on Ice” – /u/DoctorRice"

My personal favorite comes from a user named /u/PepeSylvia11:

"“Writing that this trade is good for the Kings so in five years I can quote myself when they’re doing good because of Buddy Hield and the picks they just got.”"

I see you, Pepe.
