How Deep Are The Sacramento Kings For The 2019-20 Season?
Center: Harry Giles
Harry Giles may be the most important player on the Kings’ bench, more because of his potential than his current production level. He was the top recruit out of high school just four years ago before injuries derailed his collegiate career. After a terrible start to his rookie season, Giles showed flashes of brilliance towards the end of the year that had Kings fans salivating for more.
He had 20 points in 20 minutes in a January contest, and 18 points in 17 minutes in February. He has excellent court vision and is a gifted passer, reminding fans of a certain power forward who played in Sacramento in the early 2000s.
One area that needs to be cleaned up is personal fouls. Giles averaged 2.6 fouls in just 14 minutes per game, reflected on a per-36 number of 6.6. Yikes. He had four or more fouls in 19 of the 58 games he played in his rookie season and fouled out thrice. Again, all of this in just 14 minutes per game.
Fouling is teachable and correctable, as are turnovers — another thing that Giles also struggles with at times. If he can correct his flaws and continue the trajectory he set for himself at the end of last season, Giles will becoming the intricate piece to the future of the Kings franchise. For now, he will be a focal point of a newly formed second unit that can keep the Kings in games.
