In the midst of NBA free agency, the Sacramento Kings were able to get the perfect backup point guard for De’Aaron Fox.

Going into the NBA offseason, the Sacramento Kings and Vlade Divac needed to address the backup point guard spot for next season. Guys like Yogi Ferrell and Frank Mason III were fine last year, but more consistency was needed.

Late in the first night of free agency, the Kings were able to lock in Cory Joseph to a contract worth $37 million in a duration of three years. Joseph was the final step that Divac needed to complete in terms of offseason goals. Cory is a proven backup point guard as his basketball IQ and defensive prowess will for sure help the Kings next season.

Breaking Down Cory’s Numbers

In his last two years with the Indiana Pacers, Joseph filled the backup guard spot flawlessly for them. During that span, he averaged around seven points, three rebounds, and four assists per game.

These numbers are nowhere near groundbreaking, but what made Joseph an asset for the Pacers and others was the stability he brought to the backup facilitator role. Night in and night out, teams knew what they were getting out of the eight-year veteran.

Final Thoughts

Vlade Divac was able to add guys like Dewayne Dedmon, Harrison Barnes, and Trevor Ariza to help fulfill the Kings’ holes on their roster. Now with the addition of Joseph, the offseason list is complete. Whatever holes the Kings had on their roster before, are now fulfilled.

The jury is still out whether Joseph will do a good job playing the role of De’Aaron Fox’s backup next season. But based on his track record, I think the Kings and their fans should not have to sweat about it.

Joseph throughout his career has been a smart player who can make a positive impact on both ends of the floor. If he is able to do the same with Sacramento, it will take the purple and white to greater height in their next campaign.
