F Isaiah Roby – A Royal Prospect Breakdown

While inefficient last season, Isaiah Roby has shown enough to warrant a selection somewhere in the 30s. As luck would have it for Sacramento though, he’s being mocked in the mid-40s, so the Kings could grab him at 47, should he fall.

He’s a great defensive prospect, with all the tools to be successful at the NBA level. To top it off, he’s a good passer and has some level of offensive versatility, enough to get him playing time at least. The biggest problem lies with his lack of a three-point shot entirely, but with the right coaching he could be at least respectable on the perimeter.

He’s got the size and defensive ability to run as a small-ball five for short stretches and could become a very good 3-and-D player. Roby at 47 is almost too perfect for the Kings.

C Jontay Porter

A pair of torn ACLs will prevent Jontay Porter from being the top-10 Pick he likely would’ve been had he not been injured, but loss may be the Kings’ gain.

Of course, the hope is that Porter is able to retain to form and recoup some of the money he’ll lose on draft night. And, fortunately for him, there’s a pretty decent chance that happens — and Sacramento might be the perfect place for it.

On the floor, he’s got excellent basketball IQ and is terrific above the rim. He’s also got a solid shot, which could go a long way in helping him have a long career. He still has to get clearance from NBA doctors to get on the floor, but the Kings can afford to wait, much like they did with Harry Giles.

It’s not every year one of the drafts best players falls to the second round. The chance he reaches his potentially is well worth the cost if he’s not able to play up to that level. Porter is also the only player here that has anything remotely close to star potential, and for the 47th pick that’s enough justification for me.

G Jaylen Nowell

Jaylen Nowell is a Swiss Army knife of sorts. He’s not elite in any area, but he’s solid enough in many of them to get himself drafted.

He had an excellent showing at the combine, and was arguably the PAC-12’s best player this season  — anytime you’re able to get that in the second round, it’s surely worth a shot, no?

He’s a scoring talent who is a solid ball-handler and has enough tools to make him a successful NBA role player. He’s young and, while there’s a high bar for him to clear to make it as an NBA player, his upside is still worth a shot.
