Sacramento Kings: Grading the assistant coach hires
At just 38-years-old, Jesse Mermuys already has a decade of NBA coaching experience and 18 years overall.
Since becoming an NBA assistant coach, Jesse Mermuys spent four years with the Denver Nuggets (2008-12), three seasons with the Toronto Raptors (2013-16) and Los Angeles Lakers (2016-19) and one season with the Houston Rockets (2012-13). He also was the head coach for the Toronto Raptors’ G-League affiliate, Raptors 905 in 2015-16. He shared an alma mater with Walton as well.
Mermuys is a well-regarded coaching prospect and is known for his player development. Still, Mermuys was part of a Lakers bench that was highly criticized for not being adaptable enough, that struggled with player development and failed to utilize players to their full potential.
Still, Mermuys’ resume as a solid player developer should give fans some hope for the season, but he’s another assistant coach the Kings have added to staff that doesn’t have a strong background in X’s and O’s — an important piece that Walton failed to add to his staffs in Los Angeles.
Grade: C; Mermuys is a fine choice, but he’s not elite in any area
