Sacramento Kings: Grading the assistant coach hires
Bob Beyer has been an NBA Coach for 13 years, and has been coaching since 1983.
Bob Beyer joined the Oklahoma City Thunder’s coaching staff prior to last season, leaving the Detroit Pistons after four seasons in the Motor City. Prior to that, he was an assistant with the then-Charlotte Bobcats, spent one season with the Golden State Warriors (2012-13) and the Toronto Raptors (2003-04). He also spent five season with the Orlando Magic, reaching the NBA Finals with them in 2009.
Beyer isn’t a transformative assistant coach, and won’t be expected to make a massive, highly visible impact with the Sacramento Kings. When Beyer was announced as an assistant with the Thunder, former Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy described him as a coach that’s incredibly “clear and concise” with his teachings, and also ran “about 75%” of the Pistons’ film sessions, according to The Oklahoman.
Van Gundy also said Beyer is really good at coming up with ideas on how to tweak a system and is respected for his player development. He’s regarded as more of teacher than a “gimmick guy”, and appears to be well-respected by players.
Grade: B; a solid hire that could go a long way towards helping the Sacramento Kings become a smarter team.
